 Three Channel Projection. Four Reverse
  Painted Cylinder

  7 Minutes

  Looped

By the light of the three projectors the four reverse painted cylinders form an interminable movement of shadows on a wall. Therefore, images appear in 3 registers; the painted image, the shadows and the projected image. These are accretions of Orientalism harking back to 19th century British rule in India. But the sound track pulls one into the present period, with its postcolonial aggression of the WTO and the GATT, through a sinister sounding poem.

This video /shadow play follows in line with the artist's earlier Preoccupation with shadows i.e. "The Sacred and The Profane" and "Dissonance'. However here we have one more register of images in the video. The painted image, its shadow and the video image together form an ever Changing montage of movement. Developed from Edward Said' s "Orientalism", it pulls in, with the text, the absurdity of today's postcolonial situation where 'cheap' air time on the cell phone is compared to 'vada-pau', a working class man's lunch costing Rs. 3/-. Different version exhibited in Unpacking Europe in the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam.
