Indira’s
Piano is a video installation with two monitors
and an upright piano. Indira is the name of my
mother, I call the video on her Second Daughter.
Ind’. The other video is titled MA: Marie
Antoinette, it refers to her Hungarian mother
who was a pianist and amateur opera singer. These
are animation videos, based on photographs mainly
taken by Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, husband of Marie
Antoinette, father of Indira. MA: Marie Antoinette
is about a Europian’s attraction to ther
orient, about desire as mother and wife, about
excess and assertion. Marie Antoinette’s
unstable emotional being brought her often to
the edge of life. Hammering away at the piano
keys, she decided to hear the final sound from
the click of the pistol. In Second Daughter: Indu,
Indira’s presence is somewhat liminal. Unlike
her sister, Amrita Sher-Gill, she is not assertive
in pictures as in life. Music gave meaning to
Indira’s life only as a personal, private
activity. She entombed herself in her piano.
