Apeejay Press

Apeejay Press is the new publications division of e-books World Private Ltd., owners of India's popular book retail chain, Oxford Bookstores established in 1920. The Apeejay Press is committed to the cause of promoting the best in art and design in India, made accessible through a fresh editorial approach. Through these publications book-lovers will be introduced to some of the greatest literary work coming out of India today. Today, we introduce its first publication Video Art in India.

Video Art In India

The first comprehensive book on Indian video art, it features internationally acclaimed video works by leading Indian artists such as Nalini Malani, Vivan Sundaram, Navjot Altaf, Sheba Chhachhi and an array of younger experimental video artists.

Spread across 120 lavishly illustrated pages with over 200 images, this book unfolds the gallery's vision and its commitment to nurture new media art. The artists' works have been represented in a visual narrative to bring alive the experience of the installation within the gallery space. Accessibly written and yet as powerful and complex as some of the works themselves, Video Art in India is simultaneously a documentation, a videography and an analytical account of video art. Two detailed essays by curators Pooja Sood and Johan Pijnappel provide a lucid overview of the burgeoning new media art practice in India today.

An exciting and informative resource book, Video Art In India is an essential addition to every library and a source of inspiration for artists, curators, art-lovers, critics, students, galleries and institutions.

Oxford Bookstores (established 1920)

Though Apeejay Press is a pioneering effort of e-books World Private Ltd., the company is a veteran in the business of book retailing, and successfully owns and runs Oxford Bookstores (established 1920), the chain of India's finest bookstores. These bookstores are not only retail outlets but offer a contemporary, multidimensional experience, providing access to the very best in publishing to booklovers.

The story of Oxford Bookstore began over 80 years ago on Park Street in the city of books - Calcutta. Initially known as Oxford Book and Stationary, it soon carved a special niche for itself in the entire region, dominated by Thacker & Spink and Newman's.

In 1995, to commemorate its platinum anniversary, this near iconic institution was recreated as Oxford Bookstore-Gallery by Apeejay Surrendra Group. In its new avatar it became a contemporary, multidimensional experience, keeping pace with international trends. The new facilities included well-stocked and well-researched book sections, India's first Alternative Art Gallery and top of the line amenities and services. It had reinvented itself to celebrate the "written word".

In January 2002, Oxford Bookstore came to Mumbai bringing with it an enviable selection of over 100,000 titles. The ground floor of Apeejay House in Churchgate was redesigned to create a dynamic space, brimming with fresh energy and ideas in bound volumes. As Mumbai's largest bookstore this most sought after destination for the entire family brought exciting interactive events like book readings, book launches and panel discussions, and a host of reputed national and international writers and artists to the city.

Oxford Bookstore experience is now also available in Bangalore. It boasts of being the city's largest bookstore and is spread over thousands of square feet of dynamic vibrant space at Leela Galleria. Leveraging on relationships built over 80 years with various publishers, it offers over 100,000 titles along with music, gifts, Internet, Cha Bar, gallery space, stationery, videos, CDs, CD ROMs and DVDs.

Key players in the industry like Penguin India, Oxford University Press, and Harper Collins are well represented along with prominent international publishing giants. The world's largest publisher of Art books, Thames and Hudson (UK) has joined hands exclusively with Oxford Bookstores to bring the latest titles to discerning book lovers of India.

Cha Bar

For a rejuvenating pause in between discovering books at the Oxford Bookstore, we have introduced the Cha Bar. The Cha Bar is both stylish and relaxing where a person can unwind with a hot cup of tea and reflect on the things one has just discovered in the company of books.

At the Cha Bar we have re- introduced the Indian audience to a vast range of teas blended and prepared with a precision that is the result of exhaustive research of the history of tea, its passage through time and the forms it has taken internationally. The Cha Bar is a pioneering attempt at revolutionising and revitalising the tea story and bringing it alive in a novel way in a contemporary setting. It creates a quality space that not only sells tea and tea related products, but also offers the complete tea drinking experience.
