Nataraj Sharma

Nataraj Sharma was born in 1958 in Karnataka. Ranked as one of India’s most creative painters today, he studied at M.S. University, Baroda, and his works, mostly in mixed media, are inspired by the harsh reality around him. A reality in which old houses and jungles are giving way to faceless industries, and human beings are becoming mere machines. There is a constant interplay of death and life in his work, reflecting the political, geographic, economic and historical ‘developments’ of the times. He is one of the two Indian painters to have won the Sotheby’s award as the Best Emerging Asian Artist for an autobiographical work. As a multi-faceted artist, he combines serigraphy, drawing, painting, collage and animation with video, to create a new language that combines the visual vocabulary with temporal acuity. Nataraj Sharma lives and works in Baroda.
