Umesh Maddanahalli

Umesh Maddanahalli was born in 1967 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He studied at the College of Fine Arts, Bangalore and the Sculpture Department at M.S. University, Baroda. At the same time he was also actively involved in theatre and films, working as a set designer and experimenting with contemporary materials. This not only gave him a rich interdisciplinary outlook, it also encouraged him to explore the use of different mediums and materials in his own art. By 1996 he was prolific, making a series of monumental earthworks at Kodigehalli near Bangalore. While in Germany for a short period, he also started interrogating social structures beyond the Indian milieu. Consequently his installations cross reference both, Indian and global issues. Umesh Maddanahalli lives and works as a visual artist and film actor in Bangalore.
